Schools by Grade Configuration

Data Available: 1999-00 through 2011-12

Annually, NAPCS collects school, district, and state enrollment data by grade level from official state department of education fall membership count data files. The grade level data are used to calculate grade configurations, based on categories used by the National Center for Education Statistics' Common Core of Data:

  • Elementary: low grades between Pre-Kindergarten and 3rd and high grades between Pre-Kindergarten and 8th
  • Middle: low grades between 4th and 8th and high grades between 5th and 8th
  • Middle/High: low grades between 4th and 8th and high grades between 9th and 12th
  • High: low grades between 9th and 12th and high grades between 9th and 12th
  • Elementary/Middle/High: low grades between Pre-Kindergarten and 3rd and high grades between 9th and 12th

National grade configuration data are not yet available for 2011-12 because data were unavailable for several states when the Dashboard was updated.
